Eight Steps to Record A New Holy Well |

4. Cleaning and/or restoration required. |
|
In Particular, ensure that there is no layer of slimy silt hidden under apperently clean water. |
5. Does the well need to be fenced in to protect it from roving cattle?

6. Is the water channel leading to the nearest river or stream clear or blocked? |
|

| 7. To check the water flow, drop a piece of grass or small stick into the well and watch its movements. |

|
If it swiftly disappears through an often-invisible outlet drain under the kneeling stone, you will know the water is flowing well.
If it doesn't move, there may be a blockage somewhere and you need to check where.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE DISTURB THE WELLS STONEWORK!
You may require permission from Duchas before such work is under taken. |

8. If the well is on farmers' land find out whether the owner would be generally helpful to us. |
