  • Welcome to Slaine.ie

Check out our new field kit and survival kit guides. Our eight step recording guide will help you document any new Holy Wells you may discover.

When searching for a Holy Well you can search by county here. You can also look for a well by name by using our database search facility here.

Slaine always welcomes any help you can give us in recording and preserving the holy wells and sacred springs of Ireland.

    WELL HUNTER'S FIELD KIT

This list might seem very obvious, but the following have often proved to be invaluable while actually out in the field hunting for wells, and a real hindrance if forgotten!

Please let us know if you have any other suggestions.

    • Warm clothing.
    • Waterproofs, especially wellies!
    • Waterproof gloves.
    • Local Ordnance Survey Map.
    • Compass.
    • Torch - in case it gets dark, but also to see within a covered well.
    • Camera: remember to check that it also has film inside.
    • Notepad, pens and possibly a clipboard to lean on while out in field.
    • Walking stick. Useful to test depth of well, and to negotiate muddy fields!
    • Sandwiches and a flask if out all day.
    • Details of The Holy Well Restoration Project, in case people want to know what you're up to, and also to encourage new members.
    • If you are going out alone, let someone know where you have gone and when you expect to be back.
    • If you have one, DO take your mobile phone with you, DON'T leave it in the car.
