  • The Mystery of the Missing Holy Well

News Historic Tinahely site has disappeared

A holy well in Tinahely has mysteriously disappeared and a search into its whereabouts is imminent.

The intruiging tale of the missing well was brought to the attention of Wicklow County Council at Monday's meeting by a concerned Cllr. Tommy Cullen.

The listed archaeological site, known localy as Tober Rath or St. Jude's Holy Well, has been used through the centuries by locals and outsiders alike believing its holy water to have healing powers.

But a group of residents were shocked recently when they used the good weather to make a trip to the well to collect some holy water, only to find it missing completely. Stepping stones leading to the well are also reported missing.

The local residents informed the Garda? and Cllr. Cullen indicated that he believed someone had 'bulldozed' the landmark, describing any such action as 'criminal.'

While the County Manager Eddie Sheehy hadn't heard anything about the disappearing well, he did agree to start an investigation into its whereabouts.

Tess Enright from Arklow said that the holy well was there when she visited Tinahely seven years ago but it had vanished when she returned to the area three months ago.

On Saturday last she brought Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dick Roche, up to see the site where the holy well had disappeared from.
