It has just come to my attention that the famous (and protected) St Brigid's Well located in Rosepark, Balrothery, Co Dublin. has recently been horrendously vandalised by a property developer.
The developer had been approved to erect 94 dwelling houses, and the approval was specific regarding treatment and protection of the well site.
However, it appears that the well has been filled with cement and then completely concreted over. To all intents and purposes, the well no longer exists.
There was uproar locally, and the matter is now in more official hands.
I believe that proceedings have been issued under Section 160 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 to deal with this issue.
Let's hope that those responsible are made to undo their handiwork and restore this well to its previous glory.
